How this shows up on a Flaming Katy

A thin dry rim that crumbles between the fingers

A narrow dry border on the flaming Katy, often with a faint yellow line against the healthy tissue. It appears on several leaves at once rather than spreading from one.

Heated air holds less water than the plant loses into it, so moisture leaves the leaf faster than it arrives. Penn State Extension cites ASHRAE's indoor range of 30% to 60% relative humidity, and winter heating often takes a room below it.

Telling it apart: Look at the pot rim and the soil surface. A white crust points at a build-up from tap water or feed rather than at the air. Penn State also reports misting and pebble trays do little to the humidity around a plant.

Lower leaves collapse and yellow within days of a watering

A sour smell from the compost is common on a flaming Katy, and the lowest leaves on each stem come away when pulled. The surface may look dry while everything beneath it is not.

The source for this plant describes moist but well-drained or well-drained soil. Compost that stays saturated loses the air spaces fine roots grow into, and those roots die back first.

Telling it apart: Weigh the pot in your hand. A pot still heavy a week after watering is holding more water than the roots are using.

The plant grows thin and sparse, and leans

The flaming Katy looks sparse rather than sick: fewer leaves, spaced further apart, all angled toward the window.

Its source puts it in partial shade. Under that, each new leaf costs more than it returns, so the plant builds fewer and thinner ones.

Telling it apart: Measure the gap between the newest two leaves against an older pair. Reaching is a change in spacing, not only in shade.

Possible causes, likeliest first for a Flaming Katy

  1. Most likely not enough light

Ranked higher because Flaming Katy's recorded problems point this way.

    • Partial shade RHS · read 13 September 2026

Why: Far from a bright window, a flaming katy builds leaves it cannot afford.

    What to try:

    • Move it closer to the brightest window you have, over a week or two rather than in one step.Useful: grow light
    • Water less while it is in low light; a flaming katy that is barely growing uses little.

What would settle it: Compare a new leaf with one from last year. Smaller and paler, with a longer gap below it, is the reaching pattern rather than a nutrient one.

  2. Possibly a lamp that is too far away or too weak

Ranked higher because Flaming Katy's recorded problems point this way.

    • Partial shade RHS · read 13 September 2026

Why: The light a lamp delivers falls away quickly with distance, so a flaming katy a little further from the lamp than intended gets much less.

    What to try:

    • Check the manufacturer's recommended distance for the lamp and measure it.
    • Use a lamp made for growing plants rather than an ordinary household bulb.

What would settle it: Whether the growth nearest the lamp is more compact than the growth further away. A difference down the flaming katy is a distance problem.

  3. Probably still not quite enough light

Ranked higher because Flaming Katy's recorded problems point this way.

    • Partial shade RHS · read 13 September 2026

Why: Stretching is how a flaming katy reaches for light, and an east or west window gives direct sun for only part of the day.

    What to try:

    • Check what its sources say about light on its page here.
    • Turn the pot a quarter-turn each week so the growth does not all lean one way.

What would settle it: Whether it leans. A flaming katy reaching for light bends toward the window and its newest leaves are the smallest; a flaming katy growing to its habit does neither.

What this does not cover

This page orders a decision tree's results using a plant's sourced care. It has not seen your plant, its pot or its window, and two problems at once are common: that is the usual reason a confident answer turns out wrong. The questions in the diagnosis tool narrow it further than a list can.
