Sunflower brown leaf tips and edges: causes and what to do
6 results in the diagnosis tree begin with brown tips and edges, 3 of them marked likely when the answers fit. They are ordered here for Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), using what its sources say about humidity, soil moisture and cold tolerance and 3 problems recorded for it.
Sources last read 13 September 2026.
The common sunflower is a large annual forb in the daisy family Asteraceae. The domesticated form of common sunflower is harvested for its edible seeds, which come in two types: oil and confectionary seeds. Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0
Native range: SW. U.S.A. to Mexico (temperate). Also sold as comb flower, Common Sunflower, golden, golden flower of Peru, Kansas Sunflower and St Bartholomew's star.

How this shows up on a Sunflower
Brown, papery patches on the leaves nearest the glass
The damage on the sunflower faces one way. Turn the pot round and the other side is clean.
Even a plant described as full sun can take more through glass than it would outdoors, because glass removes the breeze that carried the heat away.
Telling it apart: The edge of the damage. Scorch has a sharp boundary; rot and infection have a soft, spreading one.
RHS · read 13 September 2026Leaf tips go crisp and brown
On a sunflower the browning starts furthest from the midrib and works inward, and it crumbles rather than smears. The centre of each leaf is untouched.
Transpiration rises as the air dries, and the tissue furthest from a vein loses first. Penn State Extension notes there is no single humidity figure that suits every indoor plant, which is why this site publishes a range rather than a number. That applies while it is grown indoors; its RHS rating of H4 describes a plant that also grows outside, where the air is seldom that dry.
Telling it apart: Whether the damage advances. Dry air marks a leaf and stops; rot keeps going.

The sunflower looks battered rather than sick. Leaves are nicked and browned at the edges, and the damage is heaviest on the most exposed side.
Its source describes a sheltered spot. In an exposed one, wind both dries the leaves and damages them physically, which is why the marks follow the direction of the weather.
Telling it apart: Timing. Damage that appeared after one windy day is weather; damage that builds slowly is water or roots.

Most likely too little water
Ranked higher because Sunflower's recorded problems point this way.
- Moist but well-drained RHS · read 13 September 2026
Why: Soil dry two inches down leaves the roots nothing to send up, and the leaf edges are the last tissue in line.
What to try:
- Water thoroughly, until it runs from the drainage hole.Useful: pot with drainage holes
- Check the soil with a finger every few days rather than watering on a fixed day.Useful: moisture meter
What would settle it: Water it thoroughly and watch the next new leaves. If they come in with clean edges under steadier watering, the edges were thirst.
Most likely a build-up of salts in the soil
- Chalk, Clay, Loam, Sand; pH Alkaline or Neutral RHS · read 13 September 2026
Why: Minerals from tap water and fertiliser are left behind as water evaporates, and a white crust on the compost or the pot rim is where they show.
What to try:
- Water slowly and heavily until several times the pot's volume has run through the drainage hole, to wash the salts out.Useful: pot with drainage holes
- Scrape off the top layer of crusted compost and replace it.
What would settle it: Scrape the crust. If it is gritty and dissolves in water it is mineral; if it is fluffy it is mould, which is a different problem.
Possibly dry air
Ranked higher because Sunflower's recorded problems point this way.
- ASHRAE recommends indoor relative humidity between 30% and 60% Penn State Extension · read 13 September 2026
Why: Crisp brown edges are the leaf losing water faster than the roots replace it, and the edges go first because they are furthest from the veins.
What to try:
- Move it away from radiators, heaters and air-conditioning vents.Useful: min-max thermometer
- A room humidifier helps, according to Penn State Extension, which also reports that misting and trays of wet pebbles make almost no difference to the air.Useful: hygrometer
What would settle it: When it started. Edges that browned as the heating came on point at air; edges that browned through a humid summer point elsewhere.
Less likely for a Sunflower, still possible

What this does not cover
This page orders a decision tree's results using a plant's sourced care. It has not seen your plant, its pot or its window, and two problems at once are common: that is the usual reason a confident answer turns out wrong. The questions in the diagnosis tool narrow it further than a list can.
